Housing in Spain: Market Challenges, Rights and the Search for Solutions
Last Friday, our partner Nils Döhler, as a member of the Kreis Deutschsprachiger Führungskräfte (KDF), took part in an insightful panel discussion at the Círculo Ecuestre in Barcelona entitled “Housing in the Spotlight: Market, Rights and Conflicts”.
Together with Anna Puigdevall, Director of Som Habitatge, and Glòria Freixa, Member of the Parliament of Catalonia, the participants engaged in an open discussion from a range of perspectives on the current challenges facing the Spanish real estate market and the latest political developments in this area.
One key takeaway was that the legal framework alone cannot create new housing. Sustainable, long-term solutions require legal certainty, investment and, above all, dialogue between politics, business and society. In particular, representatives of landlords’ and tenants’ interests must pursue a realistic, evidence-based approach that does not lead to even more properties being withdrawn from the market. Furthermore, only a substantial increase in the existing housing supply across different price segments will significantly ease the current situation.
Many thanks to the speakers for their candid contributions and to KDF for organising such a successful event!
